Project narrative
The building has been the home of KWWL since 1958 and it was due for updates along with a new broadcasting studio. The project was partially funded with state historical preservation tax credits and restored much of the building to its historic roots from 100+ years ago when it was an Overland auto dealership. The new studio was constructed on the 2 nd floor while the existing studio remained in operation on the 1 st floor.
The two floors occupied by KWWL have completely overhauled with an air-cooled variable refrigerant flow (VRF) HVAC system along with an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) that provides the space with fresh air. This system was a good fit for the studio space due to the ductless fan coil unit sound performance being quieter than a traditional forced-air system. The routing of systems was difficult due to the historical preservation requirements.
An emergency generator provides 100% backup of the studio and supporting services to keep the studio online even when the station's viewing area may not be.
